When it comes to starting a family, everyone’s fertility journey is different.

But what happens when your journey to having children – or, perhaps that of someone you know – isn’t as simple? What if the more traditional pathways to parenthood aren’t going to happen at all?

Cara and Adam Steggles joined Cameron and Ali Daddo for their podcast Separate Bathrooms to talk about their fertility journey, and starting nonprofit association Fertility Support Australia.

Speaking on Separate Bathrooms, Cara and Adam revealed what’s best to say to people struggling with infertility, and what’s best to avoid.

There’s a few faux pas that people say with the best intentions but it doesn’t always help like, ‘Just relax, you’ll be able to have a baby if you just relax.’

“And sometimes conditions aren’t related to how stressed or relaxed you’re feeling, it’s the medical condition,” Adam added.

Adam also explained that sharing other people’s success stories doesn’t always motivate someone who is struggling.

“Sometimes they might say, ‘my sister’s brother’s friend has Endometriosis and Polycystic ovaries and they had a baby through IVF so I’m sure you will too.’

And they mean well,  but other people’s success stories doesn’t always motivate you,” Adam stated.

Instead, the couple recommend simply asking someone how they would like to be supported during this time.
